I Spire

Summer 2012 - Naarden

The Grote Kerk (Great Church) in Naarden has some great spires on it's steeples. My favourite is the two headed eagle, which is on the town's flag.

On the Streets

Summer 2012 - Utrecht

Utrecht's streets are full of many combinations of art - illegal, legal and Medieval all coexist.
Illegal - the classiest stencil I've ever seen.
Legal - The Letters of Utrecht, an endless poem that began lining the streets of the Oudegracht (Old Canal) this June - every Sunday a new letter is laid.
Medieval - A rock chained to a building. Why? The rock was originally placed on the corner so that carriages would not run into the building. Sometime in the middle ages it was decided that evil spirits congregated around it, so to keep them from taking it away, it was chained to the building. And, you know, it just stayed there.

I absolutely loved the day that I spent in Utrecht - I can't thank Chris enough for showing me around and sharing with me all it's fascinating history.

Wintry Mix

Winter (January) 2012 - Holland

Have you ever noticed that the weather sometimes says it's going to be a "Wintry Mix" today? Well, that's almost every day in Holland. Especially in the Winter.

First photo of the lovely Clouseau, or Clousie as he's known to his closer friends.
Second photo is of Leiden. Usually I'm in Leiden for the street market, so I hardly see this view. Even in the summer, the canal is lined with cafe barges. It's hardly ever this deserted.

Speakeasy You Say?

Fall 2011 - Sarah Lawrence

My friend Lauren (her blog here), pictured in the first and third photo, loves throwing parties. In fact, she threw the Halloween party in my previous post! In November, she decided to host a Speakeasy. Lauren is the queen of hosting all things themed, especially if they took place in a different decade. We all dressed accordingly.

Hallowe'en

Fall 2011 - Sarah Lawrence

Hallowe'en is always a good time to bust out the black and white.
My friend Lauren decided we should have a Hallowe'en party, so we put on our costumes, and made alcoholic gummy worms.

ps. Eek! Onto Fall 2011... I may just be getting somewhere!
(pps. My friend Hailey (bottom photo) was kind enough to feature this photo on her website - http://www.haileybachrach.com/index.html)

Suzanne's Garden - Black and White and Collections

Summer 2011 - Houston, Suzanne's Garden

Suzanne likes to collect things - pretty, cool, whacky things, but none the less, they collect.
The first photo is by a metal sculpture that creates sea creatures out of car parts. This is one of the many that inhabit this garden.
Then there are the wind chimes - always a new one every time I come by.
The vintage lawn chairs...
And the bottle tree. The palm leaves? So many Heineken bottles.

Did Someone Say Texas Burbon?

Summer 2011 - Houston, Suzanne's House

Suzanne and her husband Charles are really amazing about supporting local brands.
One of their favorites is Garrison Brothers. Suzanne wanted me to take some photos to send them, and this is what I ended up with. Once again this is the Pogo cat - posing without any coaxing from me!

That's my mother in the black&white shot. I loved it so much I went back in the Spring.
I'll get there eventually :)
